PS3 news: PS3 ‘will support 3D Blu-ray’

We know many of you have bitten your nails down to the quick and lost countless nights’ sleep fretting about whether or not your PS3 will support the just-ratified 3D Blu-ray standard.

Well, you’re about to get your back-scratchers back, because it will. You won’t need to do anything to their consoles, either – all you’ll need is a 3D-compatible display.

It might seem odd that it’s so easy, but it’ll work because the 3D spec is only an extension to the existing format. So if you don’t have the 3D display, the new discs will still play in good old 2D.

And when you do finally upgrade to something that can display the discs properly, you’ll find that they play in glorious 1080p Full HD. Lovely!

A demo for the game will be released early next month, to boot. Looks pretty swell, kind of a throwback to classic top-scrolling arcade shooters of old. Slim-PS3.com is updated frequently every day with the latest Free PlayStation 3 news, reviews and features.

Ubisoft Talks Splinter Cell Natal News

TVG recently had the opportunity to go hands-on with the newly announced co-op multiplayer in Splinter Cell: Conviction, make sure to check out our impressions.  We also had the chance to put a few questions to the game’s Director Patrick Redding. With interest in Project Natal heating up we put the question to him, and apparently were the first to enquire whether Sam Fisher’s antics would translate well to the motion controller. ”You and I can probably spend the next two hours brainstorming stuff like that, absolutely,” Redding claimed.  “Certainly amongst the design community at Ubisoft we’re very interested in Natal, we’re very interested in the Wii and DS and various other advancements in terms of interface.” ”I think every designer could come up with a laundry list of interesting ways to apply it to stealth gameplay, Splinter Cell in particular,” he added.  “I don’t know if there’s anybody actually thinking about it as their job description at this point, but nobody has asked me yet, so you’re the first.” So do you fancy hiding behind your sofa and pretending you’re Sam Fisher?  Let us know and we’ll make sure to put some ideas to Redding.  Look out for the full interview soon.

Sony’s Koller Promises A New Way To Game News

Sony’s Director of Marketing John Koller has stated that 2010 will see PS3 titles offer a new way to game, beyond the introduction of the motion controller. ”Going into the back half of the year, we have a number of key launches,” Koller told GamePro.  “We haven’t really announced all of them yet, but the titles that will be launching at the time are going to be very exciting. Some of the big franchises, as well as new IPs have new ways to game, not motion control gaming, but in other ways. It’s going to be a really strong lineup.” In typical executive fashion Koller also spoke about the motion controller, promising that it will do things that the Wii and Project Natal can’t but refused to specify why. ”I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooters and sports games,” Koller claimed when speaking about motion control.  “In terms of the best types of games, I’d say that right now we’re looking a real wide variety of genres that can utilize the technology.” ”Those are going to be the areas that will really define success, because they’re areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching, from a differentiation standpoint.”  ”We look at motion control as being that much more than what exists on the market. The Holy Grail of gaming is placing you as a consumer into the game physically. When we provide further details, people will see exactly where we’re going, not only from a technological standpoint on the hardware, but also where the gameplay is transitioning. It’s going to be a really exciting launch.”   Finally Koller spoke about PS2 backwards compatibility, suggesting that it’s only the media and not consumers which want to see it materialise. ”With the backwards compatibility issue, we’re at a point now in the cycle of the PlayStation 3 that there’s so many PS3 games available, so many strong PS3 games, that it’s really become far less of an issue than I think a lot people — particularly the media — are asking about.” ”In all of our studies, we’ve noticed that it’s fallen off the map in terms of demand. There’s not many requests for it much at all anymore. There’s really a high level of satisfaction on the PlayStation 3 for PS3 games themselves.”  TVG suspects that it’s more to do with the insurmountable technical hurdles caused by the intrinsic hardware differences between the PS2 and PS3; a problem that this patent was aiming to solve, but doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.

news: Australia Bans Aliens Versus Predator For the Saftey of… Adults?

One of the more interesting days in my Video Game Theory and Design class is when we chat about censorship. Not only are many students shocked to find there is no legal banning of games in the U.S., but that countries they assumed were more liberal, namely Germany, the U.K, Italy, and Australia (list of banned games).
So while it’s no shock that Australia banned Aliens Vs. Predator (and can we get a subtitle on this game to avoid confusion with the other AVP games and films?), the fact that the decision was publicly defended is quite interesting.

Michael Atkinson, Australia’s Attorney General, defended the ruling to not classify Sega’s AVP game (thereby banning it) by saying, “You don’t need to be playing a game in which you impale, decapitate and dismember people.” Of course one does not need to surf, drink beer, or swim with sting rays, yet these are all things Australian adults, and their visitors are allowed to do.
He added, “This is a question of a small number of very zealous gamers trying to impose their will on society. And I think harm society. It’s the public interest versus the small vested interest. I accept that 98 per cent, 99 per cent of gamers will tell the difference between fantasy and reality, but the 1 per cent to 2 per cent could go on to be motivated by these games to commit horrible acts of violence.”
Of course the same argument could be applied to any media, any intoxicating ingestible substance, many foods, and some pets.
The differences in legal theory here could not be more pronounced. Do you ban books or simply make publishers responsible for harm they do?
Personally, I find Australia’s stance both saddening and hypocritical. The burden to prove that games cause harm is completely ignored and paranoia is allowed to rule this situation.
It’s not that AVP looks to be a must have game, only that it is absurd that governments dictate what their citizens read, watch, and play.

PS3 news: Dante’s Inferno Preview Screenshots

Dante’s Inferno is a piece of literature ripe with graphic visual imagery and a perfect setting for the new 3D action game from EA. As seen in these screenshots, the Dante’s Inferno Video Game is dark and seductive. Perhaps Kratos is finally going to face some real competition, unlike the puny gods he’s already dispatched.
