Kojima and Wada Discuss Past E3 Happenings on Twitter

Remember Microsoft’s press conference at E3 2008? The announcement that Final Fantasy XIII would be released on the Xbox 360 was a bombshell and Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada was the one who got to deliver it. The following year another once PlayStation exclusive developer, Hideo Kojima, announced that the next major Metal Gear title would also be coming to Microsoft’s console. Besides being leaders of two of Japan’s most profitable franchises, they have one other thing in common.

Coveted Stadium Events on NES Sells for $13k – Console news

Latest console news:

An old Nintendo Entertainment System and five games soared to more than $13,000 on eBay after it was learned that an ultra rare game was included in the lot. It would appear from the sale description that the seller, a North Carolina woman, had no idea that a coveted NES collector’s item was mixed in with the lot. The bid jumped from $13 to $6,700 in just one day. The NTSC version of Stadium Events from Bandai America, Inc. is regarded as one of the more rare games for purchase in North America, with fewer than 10 copies rumored to exist. Slim PS3 news: Weekend Essentials – Issue 14

Brand new role-playing games arrive on PS3 and PSP, and PlayStation Store celebrates Valentine’s Day.

RPG paradise

In Star Ocean The Last Hope: International on PlayStation 3, humanity takes to space in search of a new home after World War III cripples the Earth. Embark on a quest for stars, oceans and hope, and experience the dynamic battle system that sets the Star Ocean series apart from other role-playing games. You can even pilot the Calnus spaceship for the first time and explore the universe as you please.

In the 30 seconds you’ve spent reading this, you could have been playing Half Minute Hero, the retro RPG on PSP. It features five radically different game modes so you could be playing a traditional RPG one second and a shoot ‘em up or a real time strategy 30 seconds later. And with stylish 8-bit graphics, it takes you back to a time when a handful of pixels could rescue a princess.

What’s in Store?

While those of you that have cracked the case in the Heavy Rain Artificial Reality Game are already sampling the Heavy Rain demo, now more can try the interactive drama on PlayStation 3 by downloading it from PlayStation Store.

echoshift and SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 are two upcoming PSP games also getting the demo treatment in PlayStation Store. The former is a perplexing puzzler based on time manipulation, while the latter is the latest instalment in the hit tactical shooter on PSP.

Love is in the air as EyePet and LittleBigPlanet get their own Valentine’s Day downloads, and what better way to express your love than with Flower? The serene downloadable hit is now available at a special price, along with a Dynamic Theme to bring some calm to your XMBTM (XrossMediaBar).

This week’s films

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to join your loved ones and friends on the couch for a good film, and the PlayStation Store Video Store has just what you’re looking for, whether that’s a romantic comedy or an explosive thriller.

Couple’s Retreat is this week’s featured release and it sees Vince Vaughn head an all-star cast in a light-hearted comedy. Eight couples embark on a group holiday, only to discover that they’ve signed up for an unconventional form of couples’ therapy – and the activities are not optional.

This week also sees the arrivals of The Taking of Pelham 123, a New York thriller starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, and District 9, the sci-fi hit set in South Africa. Both are available to rent from PlayStation Store.

Heavy Rain To Utilise Motion Controller? News

David Cage, the Co-founder of Quantic Dream and Director of Heavy Rain, has hinted that the game may still be compatible with the PS3 Motion Controller despite the fact that it will launch next week, many months ahead of the anticipated release of Sony’s peripheral.

“The very first version of the game design was based on motion control, but it was not feasible at the time. But all the controls of the final version of Heavy Rain are still based on motion,” Cage told Dagbladet (translated by MTV Multiplayer).

“I have a lot of interest in Sony’s motion device and there is a good chance that we announce something about it in the coming weeks,” he continued.

Cage is clearly indicating that the Motion Controller could be backwards compatible with Heavy Rain when the peripheral is eventually released. Whatever the case, we’ll bring more on this story as and when Cage decides to announce further details…

PS3 news: Win prizes with the LittleBigPlanet Contraption Challenge

The latest PS3 news:

Create a little bit of genius with LittleBigPlanet and be rewarded with a PSPgo.

Driven by the official PlayStation Forums, the popular Little Big Contraption Challenge is an event which dares you to show off your LittleBigPlanet creativity to the world. Each task asks you to create a specific contraption based on the challenge set by Forum member Nuclearfish, with nine completed so far.

Contraption Challenge 10 is special, however – because you can win a PSPgo and a copy of LittleBigPlanet on PSP if your contraption is good enough. Titled Amphibious Vehicle, the Challenge requires you to make a vehicle that can travel across land and water; the more creative and original your entry, the better.

To take part, all you need to do is start LittleBigPlanet on PS3, go online via PlayStation Network and select Community on your in-game Pod Computer. Then by heading to the Search menu and inputting the level name “CC10 – Template” you should find the level created by Forum member Nuclearfish. Copy it to My Moon on your Pod Computer and create your contraption within it.

Once you’re happy, publish your creation using the prefix CC10 in the level title. Five finalists will be chosen from the entries, and then a winner will be selected from a poll where Forum members vote on their favourite. For more information, head over to the Forums at community.eu.playstation.com.

You have until 28 February 2010 to publish your level, so take a look at the previous Contraption Challenge winner for inspiration, start building your Amphibious Vehicle contraptions and best of luck.

PS3 news: Vinyl Fantasy VII VF7 Mashup Pulled Down Due to Copyright Infringement

Recent PS3 news:
Didn’t I tell you earlier that you needed to download Vinyl Fantasy VII (VF7) fast?

According to Wired News, Team Teamwork, creator of Vinyl Fantasy VII, has pulled the album from the Bandcamp website due to pressure from the copyright holders of the music he mixed.

Apparently, Team Teamwork was not served a cease and desist notice, rather he was told by the Bandcamp site that a copyright holder had complained, and so the mashup artist pulled Vinyl Fantasy VII from the site. He was unaware of who filed the complaint, though he alluded to the thought that it was more likely to be Square Enix than any of the hip-hop artists they sampled. Referring to the appropriation of hip-hop Team Teamwork said, “Aside from the whole DJ Drama fiasco a few years ago, the law has been very lenient toward that media.”

Team Teamwork, also known as Boston-area graphic designer Tim Jacques, stated that the album had made him a little over a hundred dollars.

This is where the sheer silliness of all of complaints over appropriation come into play. Whenever a corporation sends a cease and desist letter to a mashup artist, or a modder, it costs thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees to do so. The economic impact of Vinyl Fantasy VII was just over a hundred dollars.

Simple math aside, Vinyl Fantasy VII actually helped both Square Enix, and Final Fantasy XIII, as well as the hip-hop artists used. By promoting their work, publicly appreciating their work, and exposing them to new audiences Vinyl Fantasy VII was nothing but great marketing for everyone involved, until someone complained and turned down the music.

When corporations cease to silence fans, who are really doing nothing more than appreciating their work, said fans, and future fans are alienated, and seek out other properties to love.

Bottom line? If your girlfriend sends you a cease and desist letter for writing her a love poem, maybe it’s time to start seeing other people. Sorry Square Enix, sorry Jay-Z, we love you, but maybe we should talk about having an “open” relationship.

Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 bundle coming – Console news

Have you yet to jump aboard the current generation of game consoles, as you did not yet come to a conclusion on whether the Wii, Xbox 360 or PS3 is able to fit your gaming needs? Well, Microsoft aims to persuade you with their latest console bundle which will not only include the Xbox 360, but also Final Fantasy XIII as well, aptly known as the Final Fantasy XIII Special Edition Bundle. Targeting folks who are in the US, you no longer need to import one from Japan if you’re a hardcore fan.

The newly announced Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII Special Edition Bundle comes complete with two wireless controllers, a copy of Final Fantasy XIII (naturally), access to exclusive downloadable content (specifically avatars) and, the undoubted highlight, a 250GB hard drive engraved with the Final Fantasy XIII name. Additionally, if you’re really looking to complete the package you could opt-in for a strictly limited edition faceplate, which will be made available ‘promotionally in very limited numbers’ created by none other than Square Enix’s famed character designer, Tetsuya Nomura. The Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII Special Edition Bundle with engraved 250GB HDD is set to land on March 9th but, at this juncture, no pricing information has been made available (either for the bundle with faceplate or without).

How much do you think this bundle will cost when available? Considering it is Final Fantasy that we’re talking about here, it would be advisable to get your advanced order in before anyone else, unless you love being disappointed on launch day.
