Call of Duty: Black Ops – what do you think so far?

Addicted already or is it the same old same old?• Call of Duty: Black Ops review

Some of you probably went to the midnight openings. Some of you will be picking up today. Some of you will already be experts on the multiplayer. For everyone who has copy then, what you think of Black Ops so far? I haven’t got a copy of the full game yet but a play at last night’s launch party suggests the action is polished as ever. It all felt very familiar though…

Anyway, what do you think of Black Ops so far?

Playstation 2 classics Ico and Shadow of Colossus in HD

Powerful games bought to new audience

Ico was the greatest game ever released on Playstation 2. Ico’s minimalist look and emotional pull – why don’t more games use the character hand-holding mechanic so memorably used here? – created a game unlike any other. The “spiritual successor” Shadow of the Colossus – also released on PS2 – didn’t quite hit the same highs but was still a memorable and powerful experience. So the confirmation that both are getting HD upgrades for a PS3 release is easily the best gaming news you will hear all month.

Famitsu – via andriasang – have published separate boxes for each but you would imagine a bundle release would make more sense in Europe. What we don’t want are any “updates” that detract from the original games. HD visuals will do fine thanks.

Anyway, what do you think? Excited by the news? And if so, what are your memories of Ico and Colossus?

Ex-Sony boss predicts new consoles in 2012-13

Capcom boss thinks Kinect and 3D are stopgaps before new consoles.

Ex-Sony Europe boss David Reeves thinks new consoles may be released sooner than thought. In an interview with gamesindustry.biz Reeves – now working for Capcom – thinks motion control and 3D are a stopgap before new consoles arrive in 2-3 years.

Two to three years, I reckon so. I don’t have any inside information. All the first-parties have got to be working on something. The tricky thing is when do you put a stake in the ground on technology? That’s the problem. You can be waiting a few extra months to implement something, but you’ve got to set a date to go with a certain chip at a certain point otherwise you’re going to miss the key milestones.

Reeves talks about Kinect and how he important he thinks it is for Microsoft.

If you map it out the Xbox 360 is right up in the corner and it has certain types of games associated with it. And Microsoft knows that in ten years time they can’t be there, they have to be appealing to families. And I reckon that strategically it’s absolutely the right move. It’s almost like two steps back and one step forward. They are right to separate Kinect from everything else.

Reeves also mentions the increasing costs of developing core titles and why downloadable content could be the future:

Where it has to get creative is with games like Grand Theft Auto and Halo, you’ve got to reinvent yourself for a new generation, and that’s difficult, especially as these games cost $50-$70 million. In terms of downloadable content as long as the content holders – the labels, the artists – aren’t too greedy, that’s really where the money is. Because otherwise you’re spending $60 million to create a new game. To produce Rock Band the guys at Harmonix are brilliant. They’re not doing a lot of graphical work, it’s not very expensive for them. SingStar was exactly the same, it becomes a licensing business in a way.

When asked about 3D Reeves was positive about the benefits for developers, but less so for consumers:

It only takes five or six lines of code to change it from a normal game to a 3D game. I remember working on MotorStorm and the guys did a 3D level in about three weeks. What I think we’ll see is that certain parts of a game will work very well in 3D and you won’t need to make a whole game in 3D. The other aspect is it’s quite a strange feeling to play games in 3D. I’ve played quite a lot, 15-20 games and not necessarily Capcom titles, and when you play them intensely like WipEout you get a sick feeling, so you have to be careful about it. When you look at racing games in 3D and a lot of action adventure games it is a step change. If it works well in 3D then publishers will do it in 3D because it’s not a massive expense to do that.

I got a headache after a 20 minute play of the Avatar game in 3D so can understand where Reeves is coming from. The bigger issues from this interview is clearly his perception that new consoles will arrive in 2-3 years. Will we really see a PS4 in 2012? Historically you would say yes but after PS2′s lengthy – and still ongoing – lifepsan it would be a surprise. An Xbox 720 in 2 years? I doubt that too – though you can easily see another upgrade or two for both consoles.

Anyway, what do you think? Will we see a new consoles from Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo within 2-3 years? And if so would you be happy to upgrade?

Natal won’t need as much space – but will motion play ever replace traditional control pads?

What do you think?

I’ve been testing out the sword slashing Red Steel 2 on the Wii for the last couple of days. It is *way* better than the original for sure, but – and call me old-fashioned here – using the Wii for any serious length of gaming time is simply much easier with the classic pad compared to the wiimote – (Monster Hunter Tri is a perfect example). I have actually had arm ache playing Red Steel 2 which is probably not the immersive experience the developers had in mind. Or maybe it was? Either way I’m still to be convinced that motion play can work with the time and control demands of a “hardcore” title. Microsof’s Project Natal may be different though, but rumours earlier this week suggested you may need a massive living space – do you have 4 metres (13 feet) of space in front of your TV? – to even use it. Understandably European and Japanese Xbox owners will have been concerned. So, Microsoft have now confirmed to Kotaku that this space need is an optimum but not essential.

The comments recently about the play space for ‘Project Natal’ were misinterpreted. It is true that the ‘Project Natal’ sensor reads the configuration of your room and adjusts play space, as appropriate. We know that living rooms come in all shapes and sizes, and have conducted numerous play tests to ensure everyone will be able to jump off the couch and into the fun when ‘Project Natal’ launches globally this holiday.

This wouldn’t be the first time that the Xbox has had these kind of concerns – remember the Japanese-unfriendly bulk of the original Xbox model and controller? – and despite the Microsoft comments you will clearly need a bit more space to jump around using Natal rather than just waving the Wiimote. What this will mean in practice remains to be seen but personally I still can’t see how you can use Natal for “hardcore” games like, say, Fable 3 without it feeling like a jarring bolt-on that adds little to the experience. Yes, I’m looking forward to playing a bit of “Natal Sports” or whatever but am yet to be convinced that motion control – whether Wii, Natal or Playstation Move – will ever really work with core games. But what about you? Agree with me? Or do you expect to be playing Modern Warfare 4 and Halo 5 with some kind of motion or full body controller?

Live gets switched off on original Xbox – nostalgia time

What are your best memories of pre-360 Xbox gaming?

The news that Microsoft are shutting down Live services for the original Xbox is not a major surprise. After all, the 360 has been on the market for nearly 5 years now and you have to wonder how much impact this decision will have. The additional news that Live support for any Xbox titles released as downloads for the 360 (Originals) will also be switched off could be more annoying, especially if you have only bought one of the games recently. But seeing as it is Friday let’s look at the positives and remember when Xbox Live was altogether more frugal – no gamerscore or achievements back then – experience.

So, what are you favourite memories from online play and Live on the original Xbox? Probably Halo-related right? Me too, although one of my best is long forgotten England International Football. Yes, it was a poor footy game but it had online co-op (the first football game on Live to have this) which made for some cracking sessions with friends. Yes, clearly standards were lower back then. Anyway – what are you favorite Live memories on the original Xbox?

Mass Effect 2 release day – thoughts so far?

Sci-fi RPG out today

Yes, I’ve been banging on about Mass Effect 2 quite a lot recently but it really is a very special game. Narrative, characterisation, combat, gorgeous synth soundtrack – Mass Effect 2 is a masterpiece. Ok, a masterpiece with annoying loading times and the occasional graphical glitch but a classic all the same. The sci-fi RPG is finally released today (in Europe) and who knows? It may even knock Just Dance off the top of the charts next week.

If romping with aliens and commanding starships isn’t your thing then you may be out of luck if you fancy buying a new release today. That is unless you like the sound of a new PC title called er, Forklift Truck Simulator 2009. Assuming then that you are a 360 or PC owner and would rather spend your gaming time giving orders in the Normandy rather than shifting boxes in a warehouse are you planning to get Mass Effect 2 today? Or waiting until the price comes down? Or actually, just not interested.

Those that are getting this weekend make sure you post your impressions below – spoiler free, of course.
