PS3 news: Obsession Confessions: minis

Find out which snackable games the PlayStation community has been filling its spare minutes with.

As February was minis month, the community at the official PlayStation Forums discussed which minis they have most enjoyed. Here are their favourites, in order of popularity, with quotes explaining why their choice is the tastiest morsel in the minis category on PlayStation Store.

1. Hero of Sparta

“This game includes epic boss fights, a lot of monsters and very large levels. The controls are excellent and God of War fans will enjoy this game a lot; they really should give it a go.” (Twilight_Rico, Netherlands)

2. VectorTD

“I love tower defence games and this one in particular is great. Graphics are not the most important thing but what is important is that this game can last for hours. The number of available towers and their prices are perfectly matched and bonuses appearing from time to time can be used in different ways, depending on your strategy. It’s a must-have for any fan of tower defence.” (artur1982, Poland)

3. Tetris

“Once you start, you can’t stop!” (fashion23gta, Portugal)

4. Zombie Tycoon

“It’s impressive how many zombies can fit in one minis title!” (Low_K0, Germany)

5. Mahjongg Artifacts 2

“You want a campaign mode? There is one in the Conquest Mode! You want to play endlessly and you do not want to be bothered by finishing a level? The infinite mode is the one you need. You like Mahjongg in solo mode but you want some more? Bonus pieces will make you happy. In a word, if you like Mahjongg, you will love Mahjongg Artifacts 2!” (Sanzein, France)

6. Fieldrunners

“Fieldrunners makes you try again and again to find the best strategy against various types of enemies. Each level gives you new challenges and even when you have completed a level, you can try again with different weapons and strategies. Fieldrunners give you a lot of play time for the money and it is my favorite minis title for both PSP and PlayStation 3.” (The_Alp, UK)

Thanks to all those who got involved – you will be receiving a PlayStation Network Voucher Code to download a copy of Tetris – and look out for another installment of Obsession Confessions, coming soon.

Slim PS3 news: Weekend Essentials – Issue 14

Brand new role-playing games arrive on PS3 and PSP, and PlayStation Store celebrates Valentine’s Day.

RPG paradise

In Star Ocean The Last Hope: International on PlayStation 3, humanity takes to space in search of a new home after World War III cripples the Earth. Embark on a quest for stars, oceans and hope, and experience the dynamic battle system that sets the Star Ocean series apart from other role-playing games. You can even pilot the Calnus spaceship for the first time and explore the universe as you please.

In the 30 seconds you’ve spent reading this, you could have been playing Half Minute Hero, the retro RPG on PSP. It features five radically different game modes so you could be playing a traditional RPG one second and a shoot ‘em up or a real time strategy 30 seconds later. And with stylish 8-bit graphics, it takes you back to a time when a handful of pixels could rescue a princess.

What’s in Store?

While those of you that have cracked the case in the Heavy Rain Artificial Reality Game are already sampling the Heavy Rain demo, now more can try the interactive drama on PlayStation 3 by downloading it from PlayStation Store.

echoshift and SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 are two upcoming PSP games also getting the demo treatment in PlayStation Store. The former is a perplexing puzzler based on time manipulation, while the latter is the latest instalment in the hit tactical shooter on PSP.

Love is in the air as EyePet and LittleBigPlanet get their own Valentine’s Day downloads, and what better way to express your love than with Flower? The serene downloadable hit is now available at a special price, along with a Dynamic Theme to bring some calm to your XMBTM (XrossMediaBar).

This week’s films

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to join your loved ones and friends on the couch for a good film, and the PlayStation Store Video Store has just what you’re looking for, whether that’s a romantic comedy or an explosive thriller.

Couple’s Retreat is this week’s featured release and it sees Vince Vaughn head an all-star cast in a light-hearted comedy. Eight couples embark on a group holiday, only to discover that they’ve signed up for an unconventional form of couples’ therapy – and the activities are not optional.

This week also sees the arrivals of The Taking of Pelham 123, a New York thriller starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, and District 9, the sci-fi hit set in South Africa. Both are available to rent from PlayStation Store.

Slim PS3 news: Analyst: Expect A “Teaser” For New GTA At E3

So many major franchises will see new installments in 2010 and while one of them won’t be Grand Theft Auto, we should certainly expect to see early details at some point.

EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich believes we could see this info and media at E3 in June. In speaking to Game Informer, Divnich says he expects to hear about the latest and greatest from Rockstar and Take-Two in about six months, which means you can certainly expect a lot of build-up to that event if this is true. However, he doesn’t think we’ll see “any playable stuff” and that essentially, we should just expect a “teaser” of some sort, but for GTA fans, that’s plenty good enough. Divnich agrees with other analysts in saying this new GTA will certainly release in 2011 and adds an interesting bit of commentary regarding potential exclusivity deals:

“I don’t foresee Microsoft or Sony attempting to obtain any type of exclusivity with the next Grand Theft Auto. Microsoft paid a lot of money for exclusivity on the downloadable content for GTA IV, which unfortunately did little to move consoles for Microsoft. Back in 2004, Grand Theft Auto was a huge brand, but only relative to the other brands that existed at the time. While the GTA brand is certainly bigger now than it was five years ago, others have emerged to reach similar levels of success, such as Call of Duty or Guitar Hero. In other words, if Sony gets an exclusive deal on GTA V, it would do little to disrupt Microsoft’s ability to move hardware, and vice versa.”

Yeah, it seems exceedingly unlikely that after the multiplatform GTAIV, Take-Two would suddenly decide to go exclusive with GTAV. Even a timed exclusive deal could only hurt sales for them and besides, with the PS3 and Xbox 360 user bases so similar these days, it makes almost no sense for third-parties to go exclusive. Well, it might if the designer believes he can only create his vision on the PS3 because the 360 can’t quite handle it…
