PS3 news: Yakuza: The story so far

Gangland treachery, power struggles and alley brawls? It can only be the history of the Yakuza series on PlayStation.

Honour and obey  October 1995, and when police arrive at an apartment in Tokyo’s red light district they find Kazuma Kiryu standing over the dead body of the Dojima family patriarch. Yet this is not the tragic outcome of some domestic dispute or petty gangland squabble, it is the cut-throat world of Yakuza on PlayStation 2.

Doing the right thing runs a distant second to maintaining the honour of your blood brother – even if that means a ten-year prison sentence and a dramatic fall from grace. And so Kiryu’s stellar rise through the ranks of the Tokyo underworld is halted by his respect for the yakuza traditions by which he is bound.

Fast forward to December 2005, and Kiryu breathes in the cloying air of Tokyo for the first time as a free man. But freedom for a man like Kiryu brings its own pressures. His old Kamurocho stomping ground has changed beyond recognition, one of his oldest friends is missing and, worse still, his Tojo clan brothers in crime consider him a traitor for the murder he didn’t commit.

Akira Nishikiyama, the man Kiryu gave ten years of his life to protect, is now the head of his own family and far from grateful for Kiryu’s sacrifice. Meanwhile, the entire Tokyo criminal fraternity is tearing the city apart in search of ten billion yen recently stolen, and Kiryu is in the firing line.

All this is set against a neon cityscape of hostess bars, game parlours and seedy clubs, where light-hearted conversation can quickly turn into a brutal knuckle fight with the slightest word uttered out of turn. Trust no one and watch the shadows and you might just survive the treacherous world of Yakuza.

Dragons clash

Kazuma Kiryu is determined to leave his dark past behind him once and for all in Yakuza 2 for PlayStation 2, but fate conspires against the man once known as the Dragon of Dojima.

One year on from the events of Yakuza, Kiryu is trying to settle into a tranquil existence. It isn’t long before his former life seeks him out, however, as a bitter typhoon of secrets and clan rivalry whips up to sweep Kiryu back into the seedy fray.

Kiryu’s Tojo clansmen face a storm on two fronts: from Japan’s south, the Omi clan; and from within, a terrible secret which has never been forgotten by a powerful Korean organisation. Revenge and a hunger for power swirl through Yakuza 2, as terrible forces clash and quickly cause Kiryu to regret ever having left his new found peace behind.

If it’s not the murder of a Korean mob boss by Kiryu’s foster father some 20 years previously, then it’s the ruthless ambition of the Dragon of Kansai, Ryuji Goda, desperate to ditch his Kansai connection and become the most feared yakuza in all of Japan.

Kiryu must use the dubious skills he thought himself finished with to fight, outwit and bury once and for all the threats to his old clan. Only then can this battle-scarred dragon claw his way back to a life of relative serenity.

Ghosts from the past

As Yakuza 3 for PlayStation 3 proves beyond a doubt, once you join the ranks of the Yakuza, you can never truly leave.

World-weary Kazuma Kiryu has finally established the sedate life he craved in the idyllic islands of Okinawa. Running a seaside orphanage with the daughter of his childhood sweetheart, his time as one of the most feared gangsters in Japan seems to belong to another life.  But when two suspicious men begin stalking Kiryu and loitering around the orphanage, a painfully familiar anxiety takes hold. Kiryu is forced to take action – and he soon discovers that much more is stake than his peace of mind.

An eviction order arrives, placing the orphanage under the threat of closure. Its beachside location is prime real estate, and a holiday resort developer has the land in its sights. All is not as it seems, however, and the fleeting glimpse of an old friend’s face in Okinawa confirms Kiryu’s growing trepidation: the Yakuza are somehow involved.

The menace of the Yakuza has even deeper roots in Japanese society than even Kiryu could have imagined. Working in murky unison with the Japanese government, it soon transpires that these gangsters are paving the way for a military base to be built.

With powerful clients to satisfy, the local yakuza clan will stop at nothing in getting rid of Kiryu, and he finds himself tangled in an all too recognisable web of tradition, deception and cold-blooded killing.

Kiryu is reluctantly thrust into a struggle for his home, his honour and his future that can only be won by confronting the shadows from his past. But the Yakuza’s grip on Kiryu’s life is vice-like, and even at the conclusion of Yakuza 3, he knows only too well his struggle to shake free is far from over. See how the saga continues with Yakuza 4 for PlayStation 3.

Pac-Man 30th anniversary Google doodle turns homepage into game – Console news

Pac-Man’s 30th anniversary is celebrated with a playable Google doodle – the first of its kind

Google has become famous for changing its logo for special events, but it has never converted it into a playable game before. Today, it is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man’s launch in Japan with a version that lets you steer your pizza-shaped protagonist* around a maze that spells out Google’s name – at least for as long as you can evade the ghosts Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde

To play, simply click the button that usually says “I’m feeling lucky” but now has the legend “Insert Coin”. However, if you don’t do anything, the game will start by itself.

If you click twice on “Insert Coin” then two people can play. Ms Pac-Man joins the game, with the second person controlling her movements using the WASD keys.

Marcin Wichary, Google programmer and senior user interface designer, says: “When I was growing up, my dad had the best job I could possibly imagine: he was an arcade game and pinball technician. For me, that meant summer trips through Poland’s coastal cities with their seasonal arcade parlors; peeking inside cabinets to learn programming and engineering secrets; and – of course – free games!”

Although Tōru Iwatani’s Pac-Man and Ms Pac-Man are now free “casual” games, they were state-of-the-art in the early 1980s, and they harvested billions of dollars in loose change. The games soon appeared on home computers, too, though a Pac-Man cartridge for an Atari 800 cost more than £30.

Ms Pac-Man was also one of the first video games to attract a female following at a time when most players were (at least reputedly) spotty boys.

Wichary says Pac-Man “seems like a natural fit for the Google homepage. They’re both deceptively straightforward, carefully hiding their complexity under the hood. There’s a light-hearted, human touch to both of them. And we can only hope you find using Google at least a quarter as enjoyable as eating dots and chasing ghosts. You know, without actually needing any quarters.”

Incidentally, Google is not alone in celebrating Pac-Man’s birthday. The Museum of Computing in Swindon is marking the milestone on Saturday when “a specially constructed maze in Swindon Town centre’s Wharf Green will be the venue for a unique ‘Human Pac-Man’ event.” Visitors to the museum will also be able to play the game on various retro machines, without the need to stock up on 50p pieces.

Charles Arthur adds: interestingly, as Apple, Google and Adobe war with each other over the importance of Adobe’s Flash system, the doodle is written entirely in HTML, CSS and Javascript – Flash isn’t required. That means it works on iPhones too…** Although the sound is in Flash – so that doesn’t work on the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad. (To move, swipe the way you want to go.) This, as a Guardian colleague points out, is the first time that Flash has made it onto the front page of Google…

* Pac-Man was based on the Japanese character for ‘mouth’.

Week-Ending Game Endings – 02.26.10 – Mega Man X

For this week’s week-ending game ending, I thought I would go with an old favorite, and a true classic…

Direct Link

With any luck, this game will someday find its way on to the Wii’s Virtual Console. And with better luck, maybe Capcom of Japan will finally wise up and put the remake, Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X, on downloadable services such as Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network (and WiiWare, if it would fit), so a wider audience can play and appreciate it, hopefully paving the way for a sequel.

Have a great weekend, everyone! Slim-PS3 is updated several times per day with the latest Free Slim PS3 news and console reviews.

Nintendo To Publish Dragon Quest IX In Europe This Summer News

Nintendo has announced that it will be publishing the DS exclusive Dragon Quest IX in Europe this summer. This follows a similar announcement yesterday for the US market.

It seems the much delayed Square Enix title will eventually find its way to Western shores, albeit a year after Japan where it sold by the bucket loads last July.

Our last Dragon Quest IX news article, from way back in November 2008, speculated that gamers would be playing the new DS (i.e. the DSi) by the time the game eventually reached Europe. With the DSi launch now long gone, Dragon Quest IX is set to arrive after the DSi XL launch in the West next month.

What have we learnt? You’re better off waiting for a new DS console than you are a Dragon Quest Western release…

Kojima and Wada Discuss Past E3 Happenings on Twitter

Remember Microsoft’s press conference at E3 2008? The announcement that Final Fantasy XIII would be released on the Xbox 360 was a bombshell and Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada was the one who got to deliver it. The following year another once PlayStation exclusive developer, Hideo Kojima, announced that the next major Metal Gear title would also be coming to Microsoft’s console. Besides being leaders of two of Japan’s most profitable franchises, they have one other thing in common.

Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 bundle coming – Console news

Have you yet to jump aboard the current generation of game consoles, as you did not yet come to a conclusion on whether the Wii, Xbox 360 or PS3 is able to fit your gaming needs? Well, Microsoft aims to persuade you with their latest console bundle which will not only include the Xbox 360, but also Final Fantasy XIII as well, aptly known as the Final Fantasy XIII Special Edition Bundle. Targeting folks who are in the US, you no longer need to import one from Japan if you’re a hardcore fan.

The newly announced Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII Special Edition Bundle comes complete with two wireless controllers, a copy of Final Fantasy XIII (naturally), access to exclusive downloadable content (specifically avatars) and, the undoubted highlight, a 250GB hard drive engraved with the Final Fantasy XIII name. Additionally, if you’re really looking to complete the package you could opt-in for a strictly limited edition faceplate, which will be made available ‘promotionally in very limited numbers’ created by none other than Square Enix’s famed character designer, Tetsuya Nomura. The Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII Special Edition Bundle with engraved 250GB HDD is set to land on March 9th but, at this juncture, no pricing information has been made available (either for the bundle with faceplate or without).

How much do you think this bundle will cost when available? Considering it is Final Fantasy that we’re talking about here, it would be advisable to get your advanced order in before anyone else, unless you love being disappointed on launch day.
