Sony’s Koller Promises A New Way To Game News

Sony’s Director of Marketing John Koller has stated that 2010 will see PS3 titles offer a new way to game, beyond the introduction of the motion controller. ”Going into the back half of the year, we have a number of key launches,” Koller told GamePro.  “We haven’t really announced all of them yet, but the titles that will be launching at the time are going to be very exciting. Some of the big franchises, as well as new IPs have new ways to game, not motion control gaming, but in other ways. It’s going to be a really strong lineup.” In typical executive fashion Koller also spoke about the motion controller, promising that it will do things that the Wii and Project Natal can’t but refused to specify why. ”I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooters and sports games,” Koller claimed when speaking about motion control.  “In terms of the best types of games, I’d say that right now we’re looking a real wide variety of genres that can utilize the technology.” ”Those are going to be the areas that will really define success, because they’re areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching, from a differentiation standpoint.”  ”We look at motion control as being that much more than what exists on the market. The Holy Grail of gaming is placing you as a consumer into the game physically. When we provide further details, people will see exactly where we’re going, not only from a technological standpoint on the hardware, but also where the gameplay is transitioning. It’s going to be a really exciting launch.”   Finally Koller spoke about PS2 backwards compatibility, suggesting that it’s only the media and not consumers which want to see it materialise. ”With the backwards compatibility issue, we’re at a point now in the cycle of the PlayStation 3 that there’s so many PS3 games available, so many strong PS3 games, that it’s really become far less of an issue than I think a lot people — particularly the media — are asking about.” ”In all of our studies, we’ve noticed that it’s fallen off the map in terms of demand. There’s not many requests for it much at all anymore. There’s really a high level of satisfaction on the PlayStation 3 for PS3 games themselves.”  TVG suspects that it’s more to do with the insurmountable technical hurdles caused by the intrinsic hardware differences between the PS2 and PS3; a problem that this patent was aiming to solve, but doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.

Slim PS3 vs Xbox 360 sales figures

Since the PS3 Slim started appearing in the retail chain around 25 August, sales of the revised console have rocketed by a huge 104% to 75,931 units sold that week, up from 37,167 consoles the week prior to the new model being released. This doesn’t tell the whole story however as the Slim PS3 wasn’t fully available until the week after these figures were collected meaning that the next set of figures will probably see an even larger jump in sales.

During the same period the Xbox 360 also saw a sales increase of 32% where it sold 74,689 units compared to 56,448 the previous week. An impressive total considering that it only had a price cut to boost sales rather than a new console.

Devoid of either a new console or a price cut Nintendo suffered a 4% drop in the same period, although it still shifted 74,245 units. Perhaps the most remarkable statistic from these figures for us is how close in sales all of the consoles are, with less than 2,000 units covering the best to worst performers.
