Samsung Series 7 Gamer laptop pleases fraggers, librarians

Ah, the library. Font of knowledge, food for the soul, place to thrash opponents on Call of Duty. Eh? That’s right, Samsung’s new gaming laptop features a library mode to keep it whisper quiet, even in the most austere of environments.

But it’s not all sshhh-ing — there are plenty of other modes too, which you select using a dial. As well as Library, there’s balanced (for everyday use), gaming (maximised CPU, fan cranked up full, touchpad turned off in case you jog it) and green to preserve battery. So it’s perfect if you’re on the go all day, sneaking in a crafty game under the boss’ radar, or just going hell for leather in Deus Ex.

Mode dial aside, the Series 7 Gamer is a gaming powerhouse, powered by a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor combined with AMD Radeon HD graphics card, and 8GB ExpressCache system (like a separate 8GB hard drive with automatic caching, improving speed).

It’s 3D too, with the 17.3-inch screen delivering eye-popping visuals at 1,920×1,080-pixel HD resolution, and a pair of Bluetooth-enabled active shutter glasses coming in the box.

The screen works at 120Hz, with 400-nit brightness and 16 million colours, thanks to Samsung’s own SuperBright Plus tech, the same seen on its Series 9 MacBook Air-alike. Though sadly this one doesn’t feature Duralumin, the material that sounds like it’s straight from the planet Krypton.

And sound? As well as two in-built speakers, you can take advantage of the Dolby Home Theatre v4 technology and hook up a 5.1- or 7.1-channel surround-sound system. Just please, not in the reference section.

The Samsung Series 7 Gamer is on sale now for £1,499 from PC World, Amazon, John Lewis and your local specialist PC gaming shop. Better dust off that library card, pronto.
