PS3 news: Sony’s Insurance Company Rejects Their Claim Over the Hacker Attacks

Well, it’s almost satisfying to know that it’s not only my home owner’s insurance claims that get rejected, but Sony’s as well.

As is well known, the hacker attack on the PlayStation Network not only left us out of the online games scene for a month, but it cost Sony exactly 4.723 gajillion dollars, or somewhere around that.

All jokes aside, Zurich American feels they shouldn’t have to pay on their insurance policy to help Sony with the $171 million dollar loss. Not only that, but they are suing Sony’s other insurance companies in an attempt to get them to cover the bill for the PlayStation Network outage.

news: Top Tips: inFamous 2

Master the creative tools of this electric adventure thanks to hints and advice from developer Sucker Punch.

Save the world or destroy it – or create it, thanks to the expansive User-Generated Content mode of inFamous 2. You can devise unique missions on PlayStation 3 and upload them via PlayStation Network to add to the ever-evolving flow of new challenges for the inFamous 2 community.

Bombard the city of New Marais with exploding disco balls, create ice sculptures taller than any building or beat enemies into submission with a succession of terrible jokes. There’s something to satisfy even the most surreal imagination.

Here, we pick three of the best nuggets of insider, do-it-yourself knowledge from the people who know best – the developers at inFamous 2 studio Sucker Punch.

Trigger happy gaming  Random events occurring in your creations can be kicked off by using special triggers. These make your missions feel unpredictable and exciting, while also letting you fine-tune parameters such as climactic set pieces. So, you could take down and restrain an enemy without disrupting the mission, or you might want an object to explode when a mission ends. Triggers are crucial to keeping players on their toes.

Bend logic to your willLearn about the mysteries of logic boxes, and make your missions some of the most dynamic and engaging around. Different combinations of logic boxes set the conditions for each mission – such as start and end points – and let you build up content layer by layer, forming a network that buzzes with your ideas.

Keep track of the conditions you set using the Smart Text box in the bottom left of the screen. It updates automatically as you add logic boxes and acts as a dynamic summary of how your mission will play out.

Pick a pathInfluencing how a non-playable character (NPC) behaves in inFamous 2 is much easier than you might think. You simply need to choose an NPC and decide how he, she or it should behave. Set path points and create a mission script using the logic boxes, and you’ll be able to introduce a target, an enemy or a sidekick to your scene.

For real drama, why not create multiple characters and paths? Imagine creating a chase sequence in an assassination mission through heaving city streets, for instance. It’d be tense, but with careful planning you could make the crowd part at just the right moment to provide the player with a clear shot at the target.

Give your mind free rein in New Marais. Discover a host of essential tips by visiting PlayStation.Blog at, where you’ll find a series of User-Generated Content tutorial videos from Sucker Punch.

Slim PS3 news: Hands on: EA SPORTS FIFA 12

Latest news:

What does the latest version of EA SPORTS’ beautiful game feel like to play? The man in charge explains.

Barcelona’s footballing geniuses Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez spring to mind when David Rutter, producer of EA SPORTS FIFA 12 on PlayStation 3, tells of a “holy trinity”. In fact, he’s talking about the standout enhancements made to this year’s edition of the majestic football series. Here, we find out how these new features shape the game.

Collision coursesImagine Arjen Robben is streaking down the wing and that you lurk in wait with a stocky defender such as Carlos Puyol. The angle and speed at which you intercept are crucial to determining where the ball – and Robben – ends up, thanks to the game’s new Player Impact Engine.

As Rutter says: “When players collide, what happens on-screen is almost exactly what would occur in real life. We have a limitless variety of collision outcomes; they’re entirely based on how you make contact with another player.”

Sharp timing could see Puyol surgically slice the ball from Robben’s toes in the blink of an eye. Wait a millisecond longer and you could send the Dutch winger spinning through the air. Crackling excitement comes from this “unpredictable physicality”, where a player’s strength doesn’t necessarily guarantee winning the ball.

Dangerous dribbling”Touch, touch, touch and a little movement”, that’s how Rutter sums up dribbling in previous games. In EA SPORTS FIFA 12, you have more direct control over the ball. Your player can shield and move with the ball more effectively, letting you weigh up the options before shuttling it on to another player.

“High fidelity control is what we’re aiming for,” says Rutter. “You can almost completely envelop the ball, containing it and relieving pressure before distributing it.”

Precision Dribbling varies the pace of a match enormously. Desperate defence flows into slick, measured build-up play thanks to improved control and your players having a clearer idea of where teammates are. In short, your flair and vision are given the stage to flourish.

Roaming roadblocks Tactical Defending radically shakes up how you’ll approach EA SPORTS FIFA 12. “We used to launch defenders at the opposition like homing missiles and we didn’t think that felt like real football,” Rutter explains. “Now we want to focus on containing the attacking player, on tracking him until he is running down a blind alley.”

What does this mean? There’s no “autopilot football”. You must think about defending as much as attacking, only pressing the tackle button when you’re sure it will work. “In this way,” Rutter reveals, “your own intelligence and footballing philosophy have more influence in the game.

“We never worry about coming up with new features. It’s fitting them all into one game that’s the challenge,” Rutter confides. Keep an eye on and PlayStation.Blog at to see what else EA SPORTS FIFA 12 has in store on PS3.

Amazon game download store prepping for October UK launch – Console news

Amazon is planning to unleash its online game download store in the UK this October, MCV reports.

The store would serve as a place where you could purchase games, then download them digitally, without having to go through all the hassle of having the darn things delivered to your house.

The service has existed in the US since 2009, which in tech-years equates roughly to the bronze age, so we’re glad Amazon has finally seen fit to bring it to our green and pleasant land. According to MCV’s sources, the service is currently in the testing phase, but is on track for a proper release in autumn.

Amazon is not the first to try and capitalise on digital downloads. Steam, from Half-Life developer Valve, is currently king of game downloads. But Amazon has the benefit of already being a household name that people trust, so when it comes to grabbing new customers it could have a massive advantage.

Assuming the UK service is the same as the US version, when you browse to a game that can be downloaded, you’ll have the option to buy it normally and have it posted to you, or to download it there and then. Tidy.

It looks as if the whole world is abandoning physical media. Not only did Apple remove the optical drive from its latest Mac mini, but it made Lion, the latest version of OS X a download via the Mac App Store.

Are you all for the gleeful abandoning of rubbish physical objects? Or do you prefer to have a physical collection of games? Let us know in the comments, or on our Facebook wall. is updated frequently each day with all latest games console news.
