Games Workshop’s Space Hulk coming to iPhone, not Android

Latest games console news:

A nail-biting game of survival horror set in the rotting spaceships of the grim far future, Space Hulk scared my pants off when Games Workshop released the board game in 1989. Now it’s licensed the game to Danish app developer Full Control, which is bringing it to PC, Mac and iOS next year.

You’ll control a squad of implausibly armoured space marines trying to escape one of the titular wrecks as you’re hunted down by the merciless Genestealers — multi-armed horrors that bear more than a passing resemblance to HR Giger’s alien.

Unlike previous PC treatments of the property, new Space Hulk won’t be a first-person shooter — it’s a 3D turn-based strategy game, in the vein of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. You’ll be able to play co-operatively or against each other with friends on different platforms, and even make your own maps. I’m absolutely delighted by this approach, because it stands the best chance of capturing what was so tense and thoughtful about the original.

Copenhagen-based Full Control have mainly released strategy games for the PC, Mac, iPhone and iPad previously. I asked CEO Thomas Hentschel Lund why Android wasn’t in the mix.

“We had to pick launch platforms, and we decided to go with the ones that had the right balance of ROI [return on investment], most team experience, least QA challenges and most users that are willing to pay for premium games,” Lund told me in an email.

“So while Android (and consoles and Windows RT) are not in the launch list, [that] doesn’t mean we do not want to do them in the future. But no promises. Let’s make Space Hulk first — then spread it out on a variety of platforms.

“We are not hating Android or Android users,” he says. “But it’s simply a more risky platform to launch on. Much less risky to go with solid platforms, get the game profitable and then port to more risky platforms once you see the performance of the given game.”

We’ve heard recently from the likes of the BBC and Sky that Android is harder to develop for than Apple’s iOS because of the different versions of the software and the many devices you need to support to make it worthwhile.

But Android is beginning to represent a better investment for app makers. A survey in August by app maker SwiftKey found Android users were narrowing the gap on iOS users in terms of the number of apps they had paid for. Meanwhile the number of Android users continues to skyrocket, with IDC estimating it took 68 per cent of the smart phone market in the second quarter of the year.

As Lund mentioned, however, the experience of developers is a key factor in deciding which platforms to launch on. As Apple has dominated apps for the last four years, it’ll be some time before dev teams build up sufficient experience to be confident of launching successfully on Android.

Space Hulk is due for launch sometime next year — check out the teaser trailer below, and you can find more details on the website. Do you remember the board game fondly? Are you annoyed it’s not launching on Android? Unload your comments below, or over on our hard as space-nails Facebook page.

Sony patents hybrid PS Move/DualShock control

What madness is this? Our pals over at sister site Gamespot have unearthed a patent for a Sony controller that combines the standard DualShock with its Move wand.

The result looks a little like a cut and shut, but it could make for a handy space saver, giving gamers the best of both worlds.

The controller would snap together to work as a standard DualShock. But then pull it apart, and you’ve got both parts of a PlayStation Move controller, for motion-sensitive gaming. A magnetometer and accelerometer enable the motion controls, and there’s vibration feedback too. Audio would also play through an embedded speaker, which would be great for receiving radio commands from an ally in a first-person shooter, say.

The patent was originally filed in May last year, but was only published yesterday.

According to one of the diagrams accompanying the patent, the PlayStation Eye camera will work with it, too. It’s not clear whether the controller is meant for the PS3 or PS4, so we could be in for a bit of a wait before it hits the shelves. If it ever does, that is.

The PS4 is rumoured to be ‘very affordable’, unlike the PS3 and other Sony consoles before it. But that doesn’t mean it’ll scrimp on the specs. It’s said to have a Blu-ray drive, 256GB hard drive, and up to 32GB of RAM. But it could have a fight on its hands. Microsoft is said to be working on an Xbox set-top box for casual gaming, as well as the Xbox 720. Nintendo, meanwhile, launched its Wii U in the UK yesterday. It’s bringing out a Wii Mini console in Canada as well, offering casual thrills on a budget.

Would you use this hybrid controller? What next-gen console are you most looking forward to? Let me know in the comments, or on Facebook.

PS3 news: Medal of Honor: Warfighter is a prisoner of war to generic gameplay – GameZone

GameZone writes, “Medal of Honor: Warfighter doesn’t do anything wrong per say; it just doesn’t really do anything different… or exciting… or memorable. It’s multiplayer is comparable to other titles on the market, while it’s single player campaign is sorely lacking the emotional drive to keep the player engaged. The end result is a generic first-person shooter.” Slim PS3 is updated regularly every day with the latest Free PlayStation news and games reviews.

Slim PS3 news: What Makes A Good Knife Kill In First-Person Shooters

Kotaku- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is definitely a competitive first-person shooter. It’s a competitive FPS that makes you feel proud of your kill/death ratio, knowing that it all had to do with raw skill. Even little detailslike being able to run faster with a knife equipped rather than your bulkier riflesolidify this claim.

There’s an emphasis on realismlike the new addition of your scope turning hazy while walkingbut the emphasis on giving every player an equal footing is what really makes the game what it is. That realism continues in one important, controversial way. The knife kill. Slim-PS3.com is updated frequently per day with the latest Free Sony Slim PS3 news and reviews.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter announced for autumn 2012 – Console news

It’s going to be Medal of Honor v Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 this year, then, as the first-person shooter battle between EA and Activision continues

EA has announced through its Medal of Honor website that the next addition to the long-running shooter series will arrive this autumn, subtitled Warfighter. The February US edition of the Official Xbox Magazine apparently has all the exclusive details.

Right now, it seems the game will be developed entirely by Danger Close, previously known as EA LA, the studio responsible for the campaign mode in 2010’s re-boot of the MoH series. The game will use the Frostbite 2.0 engine – the same tech as Battlefield 3.

Once again, it seems the story will involve so-called Tier 1 operators, elite soldiers working on special missions within enemy territory. As with the previous title, which was largely set in Afghanistan, it’s likely the emphasis will be on real-world tactics and conflicts.

This caused some controversy in 2010, when Labour MP Liam Fox complained about the appearance of Taliban fighters in Medal of Honor – however, his comments revealed only a passing knowledge of the game content, and the Labour party distanced itself from his statement. More details on the scenario of the latest title are expected to come to light at the GDC conference in two week’s time.

2010’s instalment of MoH was a critical and commercial success for EA, shifting around 5m copies, despite some criticism of the extremely short single-player mode. However, it failed to make much of a dent on Black Ops, which went on to record-breaking sales of more than 25m.

Rumours circulating at the moment suggest that Treyarch is also preparing a sequel to its own 2010 hit, Call of Duty: Black Ops. It seems the two brands will go head to head again in 2012.

Slim PS3 news: Have a 3D Christmas on PS3

Enter the third dimension with stereoscopic 3D on PlayStation 3 this Christmas.

Stereoscopic 3D continues to go from strength to strength in 2011 with more and more movies and video games adopting the eye-popping formula that has changed the way we watch High Definition films on Blu-ray Disc and how we experience PlayStation 3 games.

Accessing this brilliant entertainment on PS3 is simple. First, make sure you have a compatible TV, such as a BRAVIA 3D TV, and 3D compatible glasses or, if you’re feeling fancy, Sony’s HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer. Then read on to find out about some of the best Blu-ray 3D discs and games available to buy this Christmas from your nearest store.

Stereoscopic 3D games on PlayStation 3

If you’re looking out for the most mind-blowing stereoscopic 3D gaming there is on PlayStation 3, then check out Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception from developer, Naughty Dog. Packing in award-winning storytelling, blockbuster action and competitive and co-op multiplayer, Nathan Drake’s latest adventure is a must. Mix in stereoscopic 3D and you’ve got yourself one of the most immersive and thrilling game on PlayStation 3 in 2011.

Looking for a first person shooter that not only tests your mettle, but transforms your living room into a living, breathing war zone through the power of stereoscopic 3D? Then grab yourself a copy of the epic sci-fi action title, Killzone 3. Dropping you right into the heart of the battle, you’ll have to dodge bullets as the combat rages all around you on the treacherous planet Helghan.

Racing fans, rev your engines for the Real Driving Simulator, Gran Turismo 5, which comes rammed with over 1,000 stunning cars, more than 20 locations, over 70 track variations and stereoscopic 3D. That means car aficionados can ogle at some of the world’s greatest supercars from the likes of Ferrari and Bugatti in a whole new way.

Whipping up a storm in 2011 and hailed as the greatest superhero gaming adventure of all time, Batman: Arkham City allows you to slip into the batsuit and take on Gotham’s notorious villains inside the walls of the gargantuan Arkham City maximum security prison. Packed with a batcave full of gadgets and – best of all – stereoscopic 3D, Batman: Arkham City is the most fun you’ll have this Christmas in a pair of tights.

Blu-ray 3D discs on PlayStation 3

Battling with the family for a piece of the action on that BRAVIA 3D TV? Then be sure to grab a handful of some of the best Blu-ray 3D discs around this Christmas to avoid all-out war in the living room, including the complete Toy Story 3D collection. Each one is available separately and packed with Oscar-winning animation, witty scripts and some of the most memorable characters in film history. Oh, and did we mention that they’re all in stereoscopic 3D?

One of the most successful film series of all time came to an end in 2011 with the arrival of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, and now you can own it on Blu-ray 3D disc or download it from the Video Store of PlayStation Store this Christmas. Filled with tons of extra features and behind the scenes snippets, this final chapter in the epic series sees the battle between the good and evil forces of the wizard world escalate into an all-out war.

It’s hammer time and that can only mean one thing: no, not an MC Hammer revival, but Thor on Blu-ray 3D disc. The first of two mighty Marvel comic book movies to explode onto screens in 2011, Thor sees the arrogant warrior, played by Chris Hemsworth, banished to Earth from his home world of Asgard, where he must fight to reclaim his lost powers and learn what it takes to become a true hero. If you’re looking for more superhero action this Christmas then make sure you also pick up a copy of Captain America: The First Avenger on Blu-ray 3D disc to add to your collection.

Fancy something a little darker and perfect for the grown-ups at home? Then get ready for one hell of a ride in Drive Angry 3D. Nicolas Cage stars as Milton, a hardened criminal who has broken out of hell for one last chance at redemption. Intent on punishing a vicious cult who murdered his daughter and kidnapped his granddaughter, he has three days to stop them before they sacrifice her child under a full moon to raise the devil himself.

With loads of PlayStation 3 games and Blu-ray 3D discs to choose from, there is plenty to get you started this Christmas. news: EA sensitive to syndicate fanbase

Latest news: EA was absolutely ready for the hostile response to the revelation that the all-new syndicate game had abandoned the franchise’s roots in favour of creating a first-person shooter, EA Partners producer Ben O’Donnell has told VideoGamer.com.

“It’s EA’s IP, they were the one who released it originally. You’ve got to be sensitive of that, because people do look back on older games like that with rose tinted glasses, they really do,” said O’Donnell. “And it was a great game, so we’ve got to do the right thing by it.” Slim-PS3 is updated regularly each day with the very latest Slim PS3 news and reviews.
